Gnome 3 (from the overlay) is painfully slow with nvidia-drivers (270.30, ebuild from bugzilla) and xorg 1.10. Games (doom 3) work great, though.

I tested in my other computers (laptop with intel card, desktop with ati card and OS driver) and they work well with gnome-shell. The only slow computer is the nvidia one (funnily enough, it's the only one that doesn't fallback to classic mode at startup by default).

I'd try nouveau, but with 0.0.16 in portage I only get a distorted screen and 9999 from the overlay doesn't work right now because mesa-9999 doesn't want to compile (asks for nouveau_device.h, which is in ./usr/include/nouveau/nouveau_device.h, but mesa doesn't find it).

Anyone else with this problem? Any solution? Any option in xorg.conf that I should try?

The first thing I want to know is how well video works on a WM or DE other than Gnome. If it's the same, then X needs to be tweaked. If something else works better, there's something bjorked in Gnome.

Did you try with the 260 series? Because 270.30 as it stands right now has problems, performance is 1 of them.

You will need to downgrade xorg-server to 1.9.x but it would be good to check it out.

Works well enough on my 9800GT. What Graphic Card do you use?

did you try turning off clutter_vblank? it was causing problems on performance regressions for gnome shell on my intel gma 965. to turn it off, add this entry to /etc/environment : export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none
after that save the file and restart your pc.

I tried this, but there is no change. I love Gnome 3, but cool effects going laggy with decent graphics card is total boner killer here :(

@audiodef: everything works well (video, games) inside gnome-shell. Is gnome-shell itself which is slow. Other WMs are ok too.

@gqman69: yep. I was using 260 before. I upgraded to 270 with the hope of solving the slowness.

@XQYZ: GTS 450

@raj7095: nope. I'll try.

word has been going around on fedora forum that recent updates to Xserver, gnome shell and nouveau made it faster. try using nouveau and tell me the results. remember to update gnome-shell and xserver as well as those updates are very recent. the thread about this information is right here: http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1457201

I have nv9600 + 270.30 drivers and gnome-shell is usable. There is a kind of lag when you go to list the desktops

Ok, I have noticed one thing. When I have some icon in notification area (mouse to the right bottom corner), it is really slow. With clean notification area it is without problem.

:-( Unfortunately not. gnome-shell still freezes immediately when logging-in.

Edit: Seems to be this issue: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=ccae5c5c51b57924cd91a6ec70792d5a&t=161180

I am using 270 drivers with xorg 1.10 only. 270.30 has dropped abi9 and added abi10. Not sure what this mean for xorg 1.9...but maybe this can be problem?

ABI 9 was only used for the prereleases of xorg 1.10 since it was going to add XrandR 1.4. Since that was taken out at the last minute, they had to bump to ABI 10.

xorg-server 1.9 should be using ABI 8, which nvidia-drivers should still be supporting.
