so, after much excitement and masking/unmasking, i got gnome3 up and running as fully as i think is possible,

a few interesting bugs remain, though. among the most noteworthy: empathy runs, but when i click Edit->Accounts, nothing happens. no dialog box, no moment of delay before the menu closes, no indication that any work is being done. additionally, when i launch it from the terminal and follow the same procedure, i get no error messages.

here's what's being used for complilation:

Code:
laptop patrick # emerge -pv empathy

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] net-im/empathy-3.0.1  USE="geoloc gnome map networkmanager spell -debug -eds -sendto -test -webkit" 0 kB [1]

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB
Portage tree and overlays:
 [0] /usr/portage
 [1] /var/lib/layman/gnome
laptop patrick #

any ideas?

Hey musasabi,

You have to set use-flags for the desired protocol.

The name of the package is "net-voip/telepathy-connection-managers". Choose the desired protocols and put it in your /etc/portage/package.use file - e.g. 'echo "net-voip/telepathy-connection-managers icq irc jabber msn" >> /etc/portage/package.use' (Without ').

Best wishes,

thanks very much for the quick and thorough reply. =) i definitely knew about the variouse portage package.* files, but the completeness of your reply is something this forum doesn't often afford people. kudos.

as a means of discussion, though, how does empathy normally emerge? does it default to _some_ use flags in order to get IM functionality, or are you just expected to set them? it seems a little silly to have an IM client with no protocols by default.

You're welcome. AFAIK portage prints a message when you're emerging empathy. By default empathy has no USE-Flags, because it would be "silly" to set some by default. There would be no customization, if you know what I mean. Gentoo gives you the power for everything. ;-) So... You could customize your system and satisfy your wishes.

<OT> Why are you using Empathy? Empathy isn't mature enough - This peace of software is buggy. - Use pidgin instead! It is mature and has also plugins! :) </OT>

Have a great day,

i know~, i know~. hahaha. look at how long i've been on this forum. ;) i never realized i've been using linux for longer than i've been doing anything else, other than being a general computer nerd. =)

however, towards your OT: i literally got gnome3 working last night at like midnight. haha. i figured i'd give it a fair chance before i start tearing it apart with customizations. =)

that said, i really like the empathy integration. not liking the software so much thus far, but the integration is cool. but, i've emerged pidgin and found this ( http://blog.kagesenshi.org/2011/04/pidgin-and-gnome3.html ), so i'll be trying to get that working soon, methinks.

all that said, though, empathy isn't so bad. =) it's not pidgin, but it's nice.
