Hi,
i want to know about the status of the Paraview package. Currently in the main repository it's in version 3.6.2 (unstable) and quite outdated. Is this package still being maintained? Should i wait for version 3.10.0 in the main repo, create a local overlay or simple compile it by myself ignoring portage?
If im able to compile it sucessfuly can i contribute creating an ebuild and maybe somebody update in portage tree?

Thanks,
Guilherme (level 1 newbie gentoo)

Hi lindner,
I have no need for this program but according to my portage tree it's from april 11.
I wouldn't call that outdated.
Did you try paraview.org?
Anyway create a file package.keywords in /etc/portage.
In this file enter sci-visualization/paraview
You can use nano (as root) to do this and paraview will emerge.
Good luck.
Gerard.

Hi gerard,
Thanks for the answer, i will create the package.keywords and do this way.
By outdated i said because the version 3.6.2 is from 4 jan 2010, and there were some major releases (3.8 and 3.10) since that.
I just want to keep the bleeding edge feeling in my system.

Thank you again,
Guilherme

You're welcome.
My experience is that bleeding edge often leads to bleeding headaches.
Gerard.

There is also 3.8.1 in the science overlay. If you feel like trying to bump the package, go ahead. You can then post your ebuild and findings into a bug.

There are quite a few places for documentation and help. http://devmanual.gentoo.org/ or #gentoo-dev-help @freenode for example. You can off course ask question also here in the forum if you prefer.

Good luck, the first ebuild might be quite a challenge, but writing ebuilds will open a new dimension to the Gentoo experience.

I like a good challenge! i will try to make an updated ebuild in a local overlay and share the experience here. If everything works, the next step will be to create an ebuild for OpenFOAM (numerical simulation software) and them the simulation combo is ready. These two softwares are high demanding in cpu usage, and since they are mostly always compiled from source, Gentoo will be the best distro for this.

Thanks sera!

Hi Lindner

As sera said, Paraview 3.8.1 is available in the Sciance overlay. OpenFoam-1.7.1 is also available in the main Portage tree, along with PyFoam - no need to generate a new ebuild!

The maintainer of Paraview is working on 3.10 but I don't know when it'll be available - see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=317345

regards

Richard
