I also tried kernel 3.0-rc1 yesterday and there seems to be a problem with modules stored in an initramfs image. Genkernel doesn't seems to load them. I tagged the kernel with 2.6.40-rc1 instead of 3.0-rc1 and all the modules I need were loaded (lvm, ex4 and ahci).

Hi, I submitted a patch for this to genkernel which is already in git. Solved for me ;)

Thanks a lot! Works perfectly with 2.6.39 and 3.0-rc1.

I have the 3.0-rc2 kernel, and has started quite well and it works ;),just adjusting to git-sources ebuild to 3.0.0_rc2, but the only one I see is the video drivers, not free from Nvidia and Ati, but the free driver ati or other, go well with this kernel
Code:

[dexter4@Kagamine:~]% uname -a
Linux Kagamine 3.0.0-rc2 #1 PREEMPT Wed Jun 8 16:41:38 CLT 2011 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Portage seems to have been updated for 3.0 support, it now seems to install modules correctly. (It did for virtualbox-modules, but the module loading code must be portage shared.)

For anyone having trouble installing chromium on 3.0-rcX, have look at my bug reports.

I'm using 3.0-rc2 with the r8712u USB wireless driver from staging (needed for my new Rosewill b/g/n external adapter).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166056 Works great with Gentoo. Best little piece of hardware I ever got. Amazing improved performance, once I got the newest driver from staging in this kernel..

No problems with this kernel so far on three systems (compiled manually). Radeon driver also working nice, but I'm going to try rc3 as there are some more updates.
Code:
Alex Deucher (13):
drm/radeon/kms/blit: workaround some hw issues on evergreen+
drm/radeon/kms: add blit support for cayman (v2)
drm/radeon/kms: add missing case for cayman thermal sensor
drm/radeon/kms: fix thermal sensor reading on juniper
drm/radeon/kms: clean up the radeon kms Kconfig
drm/radeon/kms: add family ids for llano APUs
drm/radeon/kms: fill in asic struct for llano
      drm/radeon/kms: add llano pci ids
drm/radeon/kms: add support for Llano Fusion APUs
drm/radeon/kms: remove duplicate reg from r600 safe regs
drm/radeon/kms: viewport height has to be even
      drm/radeon/kms/atom: fix PHY init
drm/radeon/kms: disable hdmi audio by default

Strangely, upgrading from rc1 to rc4 results in an unbootable kernel. The /dev/sdX drives do not appear. I wonder if it's https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-882637-highlight-rc4.html / https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37562

The kernel config only changed with the few new additions:

Same here- went to rc4 without any problem on 3 Gentoo systems.

Do you mean with "The /dev/sdX drives do not appear" that udev isn't populating /dev normally when booting starts? What run level is your udev set at?

You know what, my system might have "upgraded" genkernel, that is, erased my git copy and installed a non patched one. (I'm building initramfs from it. Sorry if it's the case, just thought of it :).

edit: that was it. also just realized portage now keeps a git ebuild -9999, which is perfect for this.
