When trying to emerge istak i hit this error, i have tried googling for an answer but its eluded me so far

Itask is out of support, it was (re)renamed to Engage (there had been a bar thingy years ago which was called Engage and the itask author asked the original Engage author if he could use that name).

So, what you want to do now is:
emerge -C e_modules-itask-ng && emerge e_modules-engage

You should be able to continue where you left, since engage uses the itask-ng conf it finds on your system. At least it did here.
