yes, yes, I know: bzip or gzip -d blah blah blah...

but, as I said, I already know that. So why the post..?

I have a .bzip file, not a .bz, .bz2 or .bzip2 file, so those programs don't work... I think it's kinda licenced encryption or something...

so, does anyone know how to extract files from an actual bzip file on Linux..? :)

What do you mean they don't work. If you need help post actual error message(s). And make sure the file is not corrupted.

Also, you may not know what you have. Post the results of
Code:
file <your-strange-file>
please.

Cheers John: file identified the file as compatible with 7z:
Code:

$ 7z e Downloads/excel_files.bzip

7-Zip [64] 9.13 beta  Copyright (c) 1999-2010 Igor Pavlov  2010-04-15
p7zip Version 9.13 (locale=C,Utf16=off,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs)

Processing archive: Downloads/excel_files.bzip

Everything is Ok

Files: 12
Size:       699904
Compressed: 161480

this was the output from file:

Code:

$ file Downloads/excel_files.bzip
Downloads/excel_files.bzip: 7-zip archive data, version 0.2

Jaglover, these are the error messages:
Code:

$ gzip -d Downloads/excel_files.bzip
gzip: Downloads/excel_files.bzip: unknown suffix -- ignored

$ bzip2 -d Downloads/excel_files.bzip
bzip2: Can't guess original name for Downloads/excel_files.bzip -- using Downloads/excel_files.bzip.out
bzip2: Downloads/excel_files.bzip is not a bzip2 file.

7z / xz can extract about any compressed file of any kind. If it were indeed encrypted then you'd need the key, besides the correct tool.
