I find that I have to plug webcams directly into the USB ports connected to the motherboard.
If I try plugging them into a hub, they just won't work - bandwidth allocation or some such - when I only have keyboard/mouse and powered off devices plugged into the hub.
Has anyone had any success plugging webcams into USB hubs?
I am using kernel
Code:
Linux lyalls-pc 2.6.39-gentoo-r3 #3 SMP Sat Sep 17 22:36:13 CST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

The hub I am currently using (and this problem has occurred over a long period of time with different hubs) is a Digitech USB 2.0 7 port.

should work if your hub is powered, else your hub is taking power from your usb ports, and might draw just what will miss to fill the webcam power needs
bad usb hub : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817111402
good one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182212

there's also device and motherboard usb that doesn't met the real usb requierements.

I always use powered hubs, the current one is no exception.
Last time I looked, I ended up in the kernel source and found that the required functionality had not been implemented. That was a while ago, however. The same symptoms as back then exhibited themselves this time around, so I figured maybe it's just the crappy webcams that I use (two different webcams from different manufacturers have exhibited the same behavior)

FYI: The USB Hub I have now can be seen here, labelled differently, but identical in form and function.

Am using a little I-Rocks powered hub with a Logitec Orb AF
and it works great. It didn't work with a none powered hub.
