So I just did an emerge -uD world and upgraded to gnome 3.2 after syncing the gnome overlay. Everything compiled fine but now I get the frownie face telling me the ever so descriptive "Oh No. Something has gone wrong". I get this when start gdm through xdm or launching gnome directly with gnome-session or startx. My ~/.xsession-errors file is blank and I can't see anything in the gdm or Xorg logs. Which I've uploaded below. I don't see anything in dmesg besides one reference to "GsmXsmpServer ice_io_error_handler" Then after that it appears that gnome/gnome-shell disconnects and shuts down. Has anyone encountered this? Anyone have any ideas on how to pinpoint the error?

/var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/488613/
/var/log/gdm/:0.log
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/488614/
/var/log/gdm/:0-slave.log
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/488615/
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/488617/

I know pastebins are bad but I don't know how else to attach the logs from links.

Basically, the frownie face (the official term for it among gnome developers is the "fail whale dialog", by the way) means that gnome-shell is repeatedly crashing.

As for why it's crashing, I suspect that this line points to the cause : "gnome-shell: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/gio/modules/libgiognomeproxy.so: undefined symbol: g_mutex_new"

I recommend re-emerging dev-libs/glib, net-libs/libproxy, and net-libs/glib-networking.

WARNING, just in case: do not install 9999 versions of any of these libraries, especially glib! Most of the 9999 versions of packages in the gnome overlay are for developers working on gnome-3.3, and they will break your gnome-3.2 setup.

add user gdm to the video group and possibly also the audio group

That's no longer needed; emerging gdm-3.2.0-r1 or higher will automatically add the gdm user to the video group even if the gdm user already exists. Adding gdm to the audio group is completely unnecessary unless you are creating a very non-standard, highly customized gdm setup for blind users (and if you are, you almost certainly know what you are doing).

(Naib, you are probably thinking of a hypothetical scenario that I put forth during a discussion on #gentoo-desktop while trying to figure out the best way to solve a particular bug; it was never intended as general advice :) )

Thank you, re-emerging those dev works. I wonder why revdep didn't pickup on the broken lib? Works great now though.

I thought the face would have some cleaver name, fail whale.

Hi guys, I have the same error, the message with the fail whale you mention.
