PostPosted: Wed Dec 21, 2011 8:48 am    Post subject: error compiling cmake-2.8.6-r4 on sabayon Reply with quote

I hope it's ok to post this here - I use Sabayon just to get a desktop up easily then I 'Gentooify' it as much as possible and use emerge, which doesn't work as well as it does on a straight Gentoo build (which I use for my servers) due to all the mucking around Sabayon does with packages.

I just need help with this - I can usually work my way around these often Sabayon induced problems but not this time...

Thanks in advance and I appreciate your tolerance :?

I think you should ask sabayon's forums, although you "gentooify" the install, your base system is still sabayon.

IMHO you have a collision caused by the "gentooify".

Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software, support for Gentoo-based distributions belongs here.

equery b /usr/include/zlib.h

sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5-r2 (/usr/include/zlib.h)

You should take a look at your zlib version, kernel can also provide zlib headers, so it might just your kernel is a bit too old to build that version of cmake.
Try update zlib to a newer version (and the one i show you is my stable x86 host using cmake-2.8.4-r1, on my host that run cmake-2.8.6-r4 it have sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5.1-r2)

On the general, everything is a bit old for a stable x86, look at my host, even its sync date is 11-dec, cmake, kernel, kernel-headers, openrc, glibc, sanbox, autoconf... all tools. You seems to use a "strange" old stable tree while your sync date is newer.

I tried Sabayon on separate partition a few times.
Garbage!
You'd save time by making a regular Gentoo install.
Gerard.

Thanks for your replies guys, and sorry I posted in the wrong place...

But Sabayon is based on Gentoo, and emerge / portage isn't it's main package system - they use Sulpher / Entropy (something like that) and I don't like or use it.

I totally agree, but i prefer Gentoo - Sabayon just does a much better job of setting up a desktop environment than I ever have :P

Thanks krinn - I'll give that a go. Because of these Sabayon / Gentoo conflicts I don't update as often as I should - that's why large parts of my system are out of date... I definately did this to myself

believe me - I'm considering having another go. Sabayon does leave a lot to be desired. Actually the earlier versions, particularly around 4.2 were pretty good, but they've been getting worse since then IMO.

so? mint and ubuntu are based on debian, if you'd go to debian's from and ask about either of them, you'll get the same response.

actually I have no problem with my desktops.

but I do agree with gerard82 on the last comment (haven't tried Sabayon so I cannot comment if it is garbage or not, but I think a gentoo install is the right course of action here.

Well, i suppose if i use ubuntu and i go to debian to query help letting them think i'm using debian, i would be an ass and get kick like i should.

But i suppose also, if i don't lie and clearly state my query concern ubuntu, that the debian users will try to help me. And if they don't allow this, why should we do like as them ?

Why wouldn't we help sabayon users, the same way we help funtoo users ? As long as the user clearly says it doesn't use gentoo, and the query is in unsupported section, i see no problem.

And i would be glad to try to help even debian users, that have nothing to do with gentoo at all, just because it's linux too. The user should just keep in mind he will just get fewer answers, not because of an unfriendly "we don't like your distro", but just because as we are not using it, it's somehow a bit harder to find the solve.

TBH i'm a bit surprise you appears so unfriendly with sabayon users, not having a good day ?

@krinn,
The reason I tried Sabayon was it being based on Gentoo.
I wouldn't mind helping him but from my own experience I know it's lost time.
Recycling garbage takes a lot of effort.
Gerard.

as I don't jack about sabayon, any attempt to help on my part will result in either taking the wrong turn while trying to help or damaging the system more.

not all users take that into account while trying to help.

take for example, a project called bumblebee, not to long ago they made a critical commit to their installation script which erased /usr.

let say one gentoo user goes to a linux forum complaining on a bug, a ubuntu user answers him the following: "I use ppa version of bumblebee which fixes it, try upgrading", so the gentoo user goes online and finds out that ppa is similar to 9999 ebuilds and decides to upgrade bumblebee to 9999.
but because ubuntu is a bin based distro, the maintainer would probably check the commits or test the new bin and most probably will find the critical issue.
but on gentoo, no one usually checks the commits thus (most probably that a user will find it and not the dev) leaving the gentoo user /usr less.

I've took it to the extreme but I'm sure you see my point.

sabayon forums has a section for portage users.
Having used sabayon since version 3.4, beta test since 4.0
I have taken sabayon and use portage only on it, I have taken pure gentoo and converted to sabayon.
Either way you come out with an unstable system that is hard to maintain. When you run into issues like now, your pool of potential help is very limited.
Even those in the know are reluctant to help, very difficult to know how and what you did.
sabayon is not the gentoo easy button.
To mix entropy and portage you need to know how each package manager works really well, to get them to co exist.
I only suggest using portage for a *must have* package, and is really nice for when you blow up entropy and cant use the package manager, you can always re-emerge entropy.

So have fun on your adventure in mixing portage and entropy, would be way faster installing gentoo in the first place and have a stable system.

After being active in the sabayon community for a few years, I had 2 gentoo and 3 sabayon boxes, I replaced sabayon with funtoo.
One box left with sabayon only because it has not been booted in a month, when I do boot it, will be wiped also. :D

sorry for the delay getting back - Christmas is getting hectic :P

Thanks for the support krinn, both technical and moral - yours is more the attitude I was expecting and hoping for when I posted here...

krinn wrote:

My version:
Code:

equery b /usr/include/zlib.h
 * Searching for /usr/include/zlib.h ...
sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5-r1 (/usr/include/zlib.h)

so that seems pretty recent and unlikely to be the cause?

I've looked at the output of revdep-rebuild and there's a lot of builds pulled in - I've found this kind of thing to be pretty painful because none of the original Sabayon packages are recorded by portage so you get file collisions everywhere - not too bad when you've only got a couple of packages to emerge, but nasty with lots. I haven't found an option to ignore collisions so it's a manual / scripted task at best to remove them.

I'm thinking it will be easier - certainly faster - to rebuild.

@carpenterguy - thanks for sharing your experiences with Sabayon.

The last time I installed Sabayon (unfortunately not the box I'm having issues with) I did a full update using emerge / portage - system and world. It took quite a while, and wasn't easy, but I've found that box to be much more maintainable - did you ever try something like that?

The box I'm currently trying to resurrect I just ditched entropy and switched to portage and my experience sounds pretty similar to yours - a hard to maintain system.
