I'm working on this program now with a fairly beefy cluster that uses lustre (about 150tb worth at the moment) running on top of centos 5 and lustre 1.8. They were looking at upgrading to centos 6 and lustre 2.x but other issues arose so I can't upgrade my storage servers.

One lesson I've learned already from this mess is that a 2.x client runs slowly when trying to deal with 1.8 based storage servers.

I have a node dedicated to "transfer" services which is dying to take advantage of usb3. However the centos 5 install is holding me back at 2.6.18 with a distinctive lack of xhci module support for usb 3 cards. If I boot into centos 6, I get nice fast usb 3 transfers but dog slow i/o to the underlying lustre filesystem.

So I'm getting this hairbrained idea of turning the transfer server into a gentoo box if I can get away with a 1.8 based kernel of recent enough vintage to enable xhci. Where are folk currently using lustre on top of gentoo anyway?
