The only way I can find to change ATI (AMD) Catalyst versions is to completely clean out the old version and replace it fresh. Is there an easier way to do this? It would be nice if Portege just did this for us, but maybe that is asking too much.

I searched for a thread on an easy method, but about all I can find is this one that describes the hard way that I describe above - https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-864365-start-0.html

I do not quite see the advantage in removing the old drivers... emerge -a1 ati-drivers; /etc/init.d/xdm; rmmod fglrx; modprobe fglrx; /etc/init.d/xdm start is usually enough.
