Check menuconfig file systems and make sure ex2 and ext3 are set for in-kernel 'm' won't work

File systems --->
│ │
<*> Second extended fs support │ │
│ │ [*] Ext2 extended attributes │ │
│ │

<*> Ext3 journalling file system support │ │
│ │ [*] Default to 'data=ordered' in ext3 │ │
│ │ [*] Ext3 extended attributes │ │
│ │

Also did you use gerkernel or make && make modules_install :?:

I used make && make modules_install.

For the kernel, I had marked <*> Second extended fs support but not [*] Ext2 extended attributes. For the extended attributes, the help file in make menuconfig said to say no if you were unsure. I was unsure. I said no.

I made those changes. Rebooted, same kernel panic message.

Hmm... this might make me feel dumb but... turns out I did not select my SATA host controller in the kernel. I have that selected now. Let's recompile and see what happens.

tbrauch,

I don't see anything glaringly wrong with your setup. Try this for your kernel line

kernel /boot/kernel-3.3.8-gentoo root=/dev/sda3 rootfstype=ext3

If you have to chroot from the live cd again paste back blkid

so... it turns out that if you forget to compile your host controller, your computer simply won't boot.

Good news, though.

IT WORKS!

I was able to log in without my cd drive hooked up. Let's see if I can finish up the set up. Then, we move to installing x and gnome.
