My apologies for the terse nature of this post. Writing from my iPhone cuz laptop is useless.

I attempted to install Gentoo using the RescueCD as suggested in another post. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-929064-highlight-.html

I got as far as Chapter 8 configuring system/fstab and then something went seriously wrong. My laptop suddenly rebooted and I seemed to be in a working system but it wouldn't accept any input from my mouse or keyboard. I rebooted again and, it won't. Won't reboot at all.

In brief,

1) This is a brand new 64 bit laptop, so although possible, I seriously doubt it is a hardware failure.
2) I can boot successfully into the BIOS setup.
3) I can not boot ANY live cd/DVD regardless of distro.
4) I can boot from USB but they fail midway through. I have tried Ubuntu/Fedora/Puppy.
5) I was able to run the memtest util in Ubuntu. It completed 2 passes in 2 hours with no errors.
6) If I choose any other option in Ubuntu other than memtest it throws the following error:
Killed
Kernel Panic-not syncing: out of memory no killable processes.
Pid:546,comm:blkid not tainted 3.0.0-12-generic #20 Ubuntu
Killed Call trace
Panic+0x91/0x194
out of memory+0x20e/0x250

Which prompted me to run memtest again. No errors.

Not a happy camper right now. Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

This is a top of the line 64 bit laptop with 8gb of ram and a 1TB DRIVE.

If you can't boot any live CD or USB this is the most likely scenario.

Can you boot the FreeDOS option in SysRescue, or a Windows install disk? If DOS won't even boot, your machine is busted. Time to use that warranty.

You say you can get into the BIOS. I wonder if you've inadvertently changed some BIOS setting that's interrupting I/O.

I'd note everything down, and try resetting the BIOS to its default, if that's possible, assuming that actually makes a change.

The kernel panic says out of memory, so how much memory do the BIOS and memtest report, and is that as much as they sold you :-) ? Might be worth reseating any memory cards.
