Just followed the steps in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml to install the graphic card drivers and X servers. Then startx gave following errors

The graphic card is [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 7400 Series]. I have tried many things following similar threads but none has worked so far. Looking for helps here.

You might want to review and post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. It'll offer a bit more information.

I have posted my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file there. Please give me your thoughts, thanks.

A couple of things ... Do you have VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" set in make.conf? That line doesn't show up in the emerge --info output.

Second, I'm guessing you're trying to install the open source ATI driver. I just recently installed an HD 7750 and it didn't work with that driver (VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"). I took a look at my log and didn't see my card in the list of supported devices. I didn't spend too much time with it before going to the ATI proprietary driver which is working fine (VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx"). I saw "CAICOS" at the end of the list of supported cards in your Xorg.0.log file, but there's no mention of 7400. If you're willing, I'd try the the fglrx driver.

Good luck.

Yes, VIDEO_CARDS="radeon", it actually did show up in emerge --info output I posted (5th line from bottom).

I will give VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx" a try.

For that should I rebuild the kernel?

When I installed the ati-drivers, there was a note at the end that said that DRM should be disabled in the kernel. So in my case, yes.

You may already know, but I'll offer the following: every time you build a kernel, you have to re-install the ati-drivers. Also, I came across a note somewhere in this process that says it's best if you reboot after installing the drivers.

I have followed Gusar's solution and installed the libdrm-2.4.34. The problem is gone now. See the other thread
(https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-932476.html). Thanks all for helps.
