Hi,

I know the Stage 3 installs are the preferred method but wondering if documentation still exists for a Stage 1 install. I am developing Linux curriculum for high school computer science course and wanted to include an "old style" Gentoo installation. We will be covering three other distributions as well but really wanted to show how Gentoo Stage 1 works.

I have read the FAQ and found:

However, Gentoo still provides stage1 and stage2 tarballs. This is for development purposes (the Release Engineering team starts from a stage1 tarball to obtain a stage3)

Where are these tarballs and is there supporting documentation?

Thanks,
Murray

aint heaps in the way of supporting documentation, but the gist of it is this:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-830228.html#6303176

from the horse's mouth! (sorry Neddy, I realize you are, in fact, not a horse!)

If you unpack a stage3 tarball, bootstrap.sh is at /usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh

good general info in that thread, dont see anything that's too out of date.

i havent found a stage1 to speak of. I don't know if RELENG has their own source for such things, or if they use a stage3 to do a stage1 like the rest of us poor saps.

Hi MurrayS_from_BC,

Gentoo Developer is no longer supports stage1 installation. But there is a gentoo user still using this method (stage1), including me ;-). I am still using stage1 installation for my gentoo. And it still works. I create stage1 myself using catalyst. You can also create stage1 with metro from funtoo. But if you don't know what your doing, i recommend you to using stage3 with handbook from gentoo. It's safer to use stage3 because you can get support from gentoo developer and other gentoo user in this forum if you get an error. The choices is in your hand, and Gentoo is "penguin of choice". You can install gentoo with stage which you like ;-).
