Installing a new system with the latest minimal iso and nothing works. Ive downloaded from 2 different mirrors and get the same results.

syslog-ng wont start
rc errors

nano doesnt work "nano: error while loading shared libraries: libmagic.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

So what gives ? Is there a working iso somewhere ?

I recommend checking the Bugzilla and reporting it if this has not already been filed.

As for a working install medium, try this one

What install documentation are you following? It doesn't sound like it's the official documentation.

Also, what ISO exactly are you downloading?

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=10

iso is install-amd64-minimal-20121013.iso from 2 different mirrors. and yes of course I checked the sums

of course Im done already but I cant believe some new user would have to go through so many hoops, they wouldnt know what to do

Well, I guess my point will be that you were not following the Handbook, not exactly anyway. It's geared towards a stable install. The fact that you were getting grub2 means that you were doing a testing branch (~arch) install.

The ISO issues may be another story. Did nano not start from the bare install CD environment, from the chroot (which would indicate that it's an issues with the stages as opposed to the ISO), or from the newly booted system?

lol ? not following handbook ? thats an official link , although I understand the ~arch issue (I really think we need some documentation for this, we arent the only ones who set this)

I am investigating the iso issues , making sure its not my box or remote box (which I doubt) but I really find this unacceptable in general. Is there no QA anymore ? I guess the board is being retarded as usual instead of focusing on quality which they wanted to promote.

Dang. Sorry about that. Bug filed. The syslog-ng issue had already been reported. Pretty messed up, I agree.

The ISOs are now done with an auto-build process, which is described a little bit on the Gentoo Release Engineering page. The usual answer is to skip back a release or two if you're having trouble. Not to say that this is a desirable situation.

If you're still dissatisfied, you could always ask for your money back.
