I’m searching for a way to install kernel and modules from gentoo livecd to an external hard drive system. I just unpacked and configured stage3 there, and was going to copy kernel and modules from iso, but found a file hierarchy I am unfamiliar with. Since all I have now is an atom CPU, compiling a usual kernel will take a long time, but a ‘generic’ kernel with a lot of modules will take even more. And it‘s only in the good case.

In particular, I have right now a netbook with CHOST i686-pc-linux-gnu and same CHOST goes for the system on the external drive and livecd I downloaded.

On the iso image there are files gentoo and gentoo.igz Which one is the kernel (or what are they)? There is also squashfs image of filesystem, if I copy /lib/modules/ from there and kernel from the root of iso to my system on the external drive, will that system boot an x86 machine? In common I’m in doubt about init ramdisk, even if I copy kernel and modules, configure grub properly, may the kernel stuck on trying to mount squashfs image or any other bug I can’t predict happen?

In the future I’d wanted to get rid of ramdisk since external disk is a hard drive and therefore has no problems with rewriting, but while I have no access to necessary computing powers, I can accept it as a temporary solution, just to be able to copy files instead two-days compiling (or more), and will look for a solution without ramdisk.

I will appreciate any help.
