I've had a working dual boot between XP and Gentoo for five years. To try and help a friend, I installed Mythbuntu on unused space on /dev/sdb (my Gentoo drive). That $$%%#@ Ubuntu trashed my existing grub setup AND Windows boot, installing grub2 for booting both Windows and Linux, but totally ignoring the existing Gentoo installation. After a few hours of searching for CD's, I managed to fix Window's MBR but I still have to use the SystemRescueCD to boot into Gentoo and then I have the wrong kernel. I re-emerged grub and did the following:
Code:

#grub
> root (hd1,0)
> setup (hd1,0)
>quit
#  dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=/cdrive/bootsect.lnx count=1
# ls -l /cdrive/bootsect.lnx

When I select the bootsect.lnx boot option in XP, the screen blanks and I get "GRUB" and a flashing space. I think I have to do something with the map command, but I don't understand what it does and don't want to trash my XP install again.

I tried it again installing to the second drive MBR (hd1) /dev/sdb, but it doesn't work either. After that try, I tried booting the second hard drive from the BIOS boot options and got a grub menu screen with "speckles" all over it and not keyboard response.

Do I need to make some space on the first drive and put /boot there? This used to work with all Gentoo on the second drive.

Will this work? Or at least do no harm?

Code:
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/cdrive/bootsect.xp count=1
#grub
> root (hd1,0)
> setup (hd0)
>quit
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/cdrive/bootsect.lnx count=1
# dd if=/cdrive/bootsect.xp of=/dev/sda count=1

Yes it does. It also has the side benefit of saving your Windows MBR for any later fixing without downloading mysterious and potentially harmful utilities from the internet.
