I have a headless box but i would like to be able to have it boot to a desktop and run a few programs through wine, i use a lot of 3d apps and they all have programs to allow you to use the pc as a render node, so i would need to run them through wine.

Also is luxrender in the tree now or is it still in an overlay? I havent been able to check as I am busy recompiling the system drive after a HDD failure :(

[url=http://gpo.zugaina.org/media-gfx/luxrenderlooks like[/url] you still have to use an overlay.

running programs upon login should be possible, the exact procedure depends on the WM/DM in use.

trying to get more into using gentoo and linux for my needs so more and more questions are popping up, nice to learn about an OS though, i think if it is going to be on server i should use something lightweight, xfce or e17 or maybe one of the *box dms

You do not need X or any WM/DE installed in your headless box in order to run X applications remotely.

You run whatever command you need to start an application in your remote box (be it using Wine or not) and set DISPLAY variable to some other box on your network. The GUI of that remote application will display on that other box. That other box must accept incoming connections - which is not default setting in Gentoo.

You could also ssh from a GUI-enabled box with X11 forwarding enabled, rather than changing the configuration to accept incoming connections.
