So I was about to attempt to dual boot windows 7 and gentoo, but when I started my live USB, it sent me to (unknown) login: and all of my USB devices turned off, most importantly my keyboard.

I haven't been able to figure out the problem, and some people in IRC have also told me it shouldn't be doing that. I'm using the minimal install iso (amd64) and using unetbootin to create the live usb.

Please help, and thank you.

FYI, the official Gentoo install CD/DVD is not that great when it comes to hardware recognition. Have you tried other Linux liveCD's?

Yes, I have. I've installed Ubuntu, Debian and Linux Mint before this, mostly just for backup reasons, without any hassle.

Good, do you still have Ubuntu liveCD? It can be used to install Gentoo.

Yeah, I still have it. I tried installing it that way on my laptop before, but for some reason it always froze on me when compiling the kernel, had to do it the old fashion way, though with a desktop I probably won't have that issue.

Freezing when compiling the kernel > hardware issue. Overheating, bad RAM, etc.

Yes I know, though it only happened when I did it the way you described, I had no problems while compiling regularly.
