I do:
Code:
livecd portage # export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
(chroot) livecd portage # mkdir /usr/portage

Following the manual fairly close I didn't expect to get the message:

Code:
mkdir: cannot create directory '/usr/portage': File exists

I don't understand, was the mkdir put in there to ensure the directory exists even though we made it earlier?

Things change now and then. It looks like this mkdir command might not be necessary at this point any more. But anyway, this isn't an error, so don't worry about it. The directory exists, and that's all that matters. :)
