im looking to install gentoo with btrfs. (im actually writing a wiki about it right now)

i have a few problems though. fdisk -l shows the first partition starting at sector 63. ive had this problem before, with seemingly no option to change the partition start sector with cfdisk.

fdisk is unreasonable to use, but does ask where to start the partition.

You might need to run gptfdisk instead of the old school mbr based schemes. I'm guessing newer EFI mobo's might be messing around with this too. The last time I used gptfdisk on stuff, I was wishing that there was something like the sfdisk read from stdin mode for it because I did a whole backblaze storage pod with 3tb seagates.

With MBR the 1st Partition is started at 63 to get room for the bootloader. With GPT it would be the BIOS-Boot-Partition or EFI-System on EFI Systems.

63 is enough for syslinux or lilo, not grub2 (and i doubt grub original) i just gparted, but id prefer a little less gui dependence for the hardcore. fdisk can start partitions past 63, but its unreasonable to use. i said hey up stream about this.

63 is enough for grub and grub2, since only the core must fit there.

"warning: your core.img is unusually large. It won't fit in the embedding area."

(nabbed from this thread)

i gparted to start @ 2megs instead of 63 sectors or what ever. btrfs boots well on the test virtual machine
