Hello all,

I just reached chapter 7 in the handbook and came across an error at "Code Listing 1.1: Installing a kernel source"

The following is the entire line for my line entry, including the text before the prompt.

(chroot) livecd / # emerge gentoo-sources
"/etc/portage/make.conf", line 1: Invalid token 'settings' (not '=')

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

A.

Check /etc/portage/make.conf , You must have a typo or something in it.

Thanks for the tip. It was a dodgy core setting in section 3.2.

Main manual: CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe"
Setting used: CFLAGS="-march=corei7 -O2 -pipe"
Corrected setting: CFLAGS="-march=core-avx2 -O2 -pipe"

The last of the three appears to work (touch wood). It seems I missed -avx off the end of the march section as I wasn't wearing my glasses. I'm glad I went back though as I noticed I should have used the instructions for AVX2.

Thanks,

A.

i leave my cflags alone. CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"

&& then

mount /boot

emerge -av vanilla-sources

cd /usr/src
ln -s linux* linux
cd linux

make clean && make distclean && make mrproper && make menuconfig

fix your config settings up.....

make && make modules_install && make install

then grub or lilo your system up then reboot. you could emerge what ever and do what ever but thats known working well for me....

missing -avx wouldn't have spawned that error fyi, it would more than likely been some other subtle formatting error which was corrected when you added the -avx
corei7 is a valid arch.
EVEN if it wasn't (and what you have now is) that would have caused a gcc error once you started compiling, emerging kernel sources doesn't involve gcc so that (potentially) invalid argument to gcc would not have been triggered.

The error message you are writing points towards a parsing error of the make.conf file, ie formatting.
