PostPosted: Tue Sep 03, 2013 6:34 am    Post subject: Dual Boot with Win 8 on Samsung NP530U3C Ultrabook Reply with quote

Good morning,

I had some sleepless nights: i'm trying to configure a dual boot with Windows 8 on my Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 (Intel Core i7 IvyBridge). Windows is installed in EFI mode. I shrinked the Windows partition to get space for the gentoo installation so there is an EFI partition where the "windows bootloader" is placed. I also installed the newest BIOS update from Samsung.

In short: I followed this manual of the gentoo wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/UEFI_Dual_boot_with_Windows_7/8

  • 1st) Shrink existing windows installation
  • 2nd) Get rEFInd
  • 3rd) Install Gentoo with that special kernel configuration

My problem: rEFIind does not find the gentoo installation. I see the rEFInd bootloader but there is only windows in menu.[/quote]

Here are some necessary informations of my installation:

partitions & kernel config

Code:
root@ubuntu:/home/ubuntu# gdisk /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Partition table scan:
  MBR: protective
  BSD: not present
  APM: not present
  GPT: present

Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.

For the first attempt i used genkernel --menuconfig all. I stored the kernel image in the new partition sda4. After the system did not boot (or better: rEFInd did not find this kernel image) I copied the kernel image to the windows EFI partition (sda1). Without success:

Where is the mistake? The only difference I see is that i use an Ubuntu Live CD instead of a System Rescue Cd?

Thank you very much!

when the ubuntu livecd is in the cd drive did/does refind show an entry for the ubuntu cd? Did you use refind to boot the ubuntu livecd as the install media for gentoo?

Quote:

/dev/sdb1: LABEL="MYLINUXLIVE" UUID="2A9E-94A3" TYPE="vfat"
Does not show entries with PARTUUID. PARTUUID/PARTLABEL identifies a GPT partition. UUID/LABEL identifies a filesystem. My blkid, for example, shows:
Quote:
/dev/sda6: LABEL="OCZ128" UUID="f7bd2bec-3688-4336-8c63-e6921ae5e3bf" TYPE="reiserfs" PARTLABEL="OCZ128" PARTUUID="89bc9633-fbc9-4a90-8a67-e058cb655d95"
You must use the real PARTUUID in the EFI STUB kernel configuration. Calling the filesystem UUID a PARTUUID will not work.

Hi DONAHUE,

rEFInd recognizes the Ubuntu Live CD and Windows.

I found the mistake. It is a very simple thing and I don't know why it is not written in this documentation.

The kernel must begin with bzImage OR vmlinuz. rEFInd finds only kernels beginning with that names. My problem was that genkernel creates a kernel which is called kernel-XYZ :-)

Yes, i have to use the PARTUUID. Under Ubuntu blkid only shows the UUID. So have a look in /dev/disk/by-partuuid/[/b]

Oops. Good catch. Now written in.
