Hello,

I have tried to install layman and ran into a weird error:
Quote:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] app-portage/layman-1.4.2-r3 USE="-bazaar -cvs -darcs -git -mercurial -subversion {-test}"

!!! The following update has been skipped due to unsatisfied dependencies:

app-portage/layman:0

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "virtual/python-argparse[python_targets_python2_6(-)?,python_targets_python2_7(-)?,python_targets_pypy2_0(-)?,-python_single_target_python2_6(-),-python_single_target_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_pypy2_0(-)]" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- virtual/python-argparse-1::gentoo (masked by: invalid: RDEPEND: USE flag 'python_targets_python2_5' referenced in conditional 'python_targets_python2_5?' is not in IUSE)
- virtual/python-argparse-0::gentoo (masked by: invalid: RDEPEND: USE flag 'python_targets_python2_5' referenced in conditional 'python_targets_python2_5?' is not in IUSE)

(dependency required by "app-portage/layman-2.0.0" [ebuild])
For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I tried various things, such as specifying various values to PYTHON_TARGETS, but I didn't get anything different. Searches on Google hinted to a bug in a portage version that was corrected last January, however I am installing in a new machine which uses snapshots from August and was updated during the installation with "emerge --sync" . What's weird though is that the correction was in portage 2.3 , while the last version I can find is 2.2 (and it is masked by ~amd64). And I did install layman in another new machine created with the same snapshots 2 weeks ago, without notable problems; the only difference was the "emerge --sync" which was 2 weeks older.

At this point I am completely stuck, this error seems to make no sense. If you have some hints at what I could be doing wrong, I would be very happy :-)

Ah, and here is my "emerge --info" :

There was a bug in the ebuild which has been fixed. Re-sync and try again.

I had already done a sync during the installation (yesterday). I did another one today without success (even installed the ~amd64 masked one, 2.2.1).

Then probably you are fetching from a mirror which is out of date.

As a manual temporary workaround you can edit the virtual/python-argparse ebuild by removing every word containing python_2_5 or python_3_1 and then call ebuild /path/to/your/ebuild manifest.

Probably what I needed was a good night sleep  I had missed the fact that the problem lied with the package argparse, and I somewhat solved the problem by installing a different version. portage wanted to install argparse-1.2.1-r2 ; I manually installed argparse 1.2.1 (without -r2), and layman installed without problem. portage still dumps the same ugly error, but only to notify me that a specific version was skipped. If I could get rid of it it would be nice, but otherwise I'm not stuck anymore.

About the mirror that is out of date, I never changed it, so I'm not sure what could have happened; maybe time to investigate :-/
