umount -l /root/rescue{/boot,/proc,}

umount: /root/rescue/boot: not mounted
umount: /root/rescue: not mounted

Shall I go ahead with the rest like:

there seems to be 8 blocks

Total: 1081 packages (477 upgrades, 151 new, 9 in new slots, 444 reinstalls, 1081 binaries, 6 uninstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB
Conflict: 8 blocks

Should I say No to merging

emerge --usepkgonly -peav world|wgetpaste

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "gnome-base/gnome".
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

Looks like some of the blocks are related to games which I don't play at all in any case.

I was never successful attaching a printer, but I can live without it. So, I don't mind getting rid of them, as long as I can get the system up.

OK, there are no blocks. Although I was not sure about unmerging libusb...

Total: 936 packages (428 upgrades, 144 new, 8 in new slots, 356 reinstalls, 936 binaries), Size of downloads: 0 kB

I wonder how long that will take. If it is too long I will go home, but would like to know next steps...
