auddoula,

In the kernel, arch/x86 is where both 64 bit and 32 bit kernel binaries go.
Around 2.6.26, the separate kernel trees for 32 bit and 64 bit AMD/Intel CPUs were merged. What is actually there is set by a kernel flag.

The i386 and x86_64 directories were both reduced to symbolic links pointing to x86.

Oh well.. no such luck. But at least I don't get panic screen.

I got a black screen with <hostname>.unknown_domain (Linux x86_64 3.10.7)
login:

But I can't even get to password.
After typing in login name,
it takes me back to login prompt.

So, it is an improvement, but not where I want to be...

I am back in chroot. I just realized that there is no passwd in chroot. I thought I could ensure there is a proper password for the root.

auddoula,

Go into the chroot and run the passwd commant to set the password for root in your gentoo.
If you do it outside the chroot, you ser the password in the liveCD, which is forgotten on log out

* Searching for passwd ...
sys-apps/baselayout-2.2 (/usr/share/baselayout/passwd)
sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5.1-r1 (/usr/bin/passwd -> /bin/passwd)
sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5.1-r1 (/bin/passwd)
sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r2 (/etc/pam.d/passwd)
sys-kernel/genkernel-3.4.45.1 (/usr/share/genkernel/netboot/misc/etc/passwd)

so
Code:
 emerge -1av baselayout shadow pambase

Ok, doing the gettext. Just out of curiosity, we are not installing from binaries of the virtual chroot we created earlier anymore?

OK, I am back to the same black screen with proper hostname but unknown domain and login prompt.
I am able to login as root!!

I have not tried startx or anything else..

/etc/conf.d/net seems to be correctly set for a static IP, but hostname is not resolved, presumably. I can ping a specific IP address though, but not let's say google.com

I logged in as a user, tried startx, but it choked, besides hostname lookup failure,
/usr/bin/X: error while loading shared libraries.
Xinit" server error.
