webkit-gtk should not occur in that emerge, a fetch fail is more likely with no network connection

Code:
ls /etc/init.d/dhcp*
if you have one comment out every line in /etc/conf.d.net and
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
see if dhcp will connect you
I have a vague memory of a cisco router that believed in not allowing fixed ip after dhcp ip until a day or two passed

No dhcp. I can only use static address. At the boot/reboot time the IP shows up, and looks OK. I used the same thing with lrescue cd, and it worked. SO, I am a bit puzzled.

Of course, we can always go back to rescue CD chroot again..

So what is your network, 192.168.2.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/24 ?

You should leave broadcast out, it will be calculated for you.

In case your net is 192.168.2.0/24: config_eth0="192.168.2.203 netmask 255.255.255.0"
In case your net is 192.168.1.0/24: config_eth0="192.168.1.203 netmask 255.255.255.0"

Then set route:
routes_eth0="default via 192.168.2.X"
or
routes_eth0="default via 192.168.1.X"

where X is the gateway.

Thank you. i am quite a bit green in this business (hence the persistence), but I have 4 IP numbers in hand:
1. static IP address for the machine
2. Gateway IP
3. DNS 1
4. DNS 2
So, I can understand in terms of these three, actually, IPs.

@Jag
config_eth0="192.168.1.203 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255" is my typo in an example which was echoed back as a counter example regarding brackets

@ auddoula
Code:
wgetpaste /etc/conf.d/net
ifconfig wgetpaste
would be worth doing since this problem is weird

Code:
ls -l /usr/lib/libpcre*
??
We may be screwed. pcre thing seems to be some sort of traffic cop that stops everything.
"Perl-compatible regular expression library" that is used to extract and compose commands, may have direct relation to the inability to parse the net script
Code:
emerge -s libpcre
??

Done, looks like we have to do this for a lot of packages. Are there no automated way of getting those binaries? I thought we already did that earlier.
