auddoula,

This says that the binary nano you have has been built with different USE flags than the nano you have asked for.
You can either use the binary nano you have it let it build, as its only a small package, to get the USE flags you have set.

auddoula,

Thats a pile of rebuilds because of non matching USE flags - the * shows the changes and one new package.

Yes, I rebooted. I have the same problem with net. However, I realized that net.example file, on which my net is based on, is obsolete. Perhaps, we can get a a current net.example which I could modify.

I have three lines in my net file:

config_eth0="IP_address netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast IP_address"
dns_domain_lo="mydomain"
dns_servers_eth0="IP_address1 IP_address_2"

Does that sound reasonable?

auddoula,

The net script syntax has changed very little and openrc still works with the old syntax.

The new example file should be in /usr/share/doc/openrc...

auddoula,

Thats half a static setup.
You will need
Code:
routes_eth0="default via IP"
where IP is the next hop towards the internet

Thank you very much, I got my network working! I was missing the other half of the script as Neddy pointed out. The one thing I still cant do is:
hostname -i
it gives me unknown host
but hostname gives the correct name. That is not important in any case.

I am ready for the final stretch, hopefully..

assuming network is connected and that problem is behind us, on to desktop:
Code:
emerge -s  consolekit upower udisk policykit | wgetpaste
should be a useful status check
stable nvidia-drivers frequently lags and does not support the latest stable kernel so:
Code:
echo "x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers ~amd64" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

hopefully the need for a patch to cope with kernel-3-10.7 has been obviated by the testing version
Code:
emerge -av xterm xclock twm  xorg-server nvidia-drivers xf86-video-vesa xf86-input-evdev

build xorg.conf:
Code:
nvidia-xconfig

pull the trigger
Code:
startx

if it just breaks,
Code:
wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log
post any relevant terminal messages
if goes to black screen with three white windows, xserver works, kde failed to start, exit entered in xterm will get back the basic terminal
if kde works ....

Alright, I'm wondering now what I did wrong. Good many posts ago I gave clear pointers (or at least I think that's what I did) how to set up static connection. Apparently it was no use. What did I do wrong? :roll:

Code:
hostname -i
looks in /etc/hosts for a listing like
Quote:
hostname 192.168.1.2
and responds with the 192.168.1.2 if your hostname appears many times with many ip's it should respond with all ip's
edit /etc/hosts and make an entry or entries if you used to have all or some of the other net mates
