hello. iam new to the area of gentoo, but i am using linux for a long time.
i do have a vps running gentoo and iwould like to install apache.
up to now i have done:
-emerge apache -av
# ps aux | grep apache
root 22291 0.0 0.1 2640 580 pts/0 S+ 22:41 0:00 grep --colour=auto apache
# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
* WARNING: apache2 has already been started
#

then when i point to the ip of the vps i do not get the site. any idea what it is wrong with the installation?

which use flags do i need to set it up correctly?

hi, these are the exact steps i am following, but i am getting errors.
i am afraid it has to do with the use flags, but i got no idea which flags to use for apache.

post the errors... apache should work out of the box...

if i dont have my computers name in /etc/hosts i get this error

apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for mkultra

mkultra@mkultra ~ $ nano /etc/hosts

127.0.0.1 localhost mkultra

sometimes you have to have the user also, since my user name and box name are the same ive evaded that problem. for example

127.0.0.1 localhost mkultra root userx

then it starts fine.....

mkultra@mkultra ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
* apache2 not running (no pid file)
* Starting apache2 ...
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName [ ok ]

Have you set any "use" flags for apache (package.use), or modified the apache modules variable in make.conf? Maybe try to check the logs in /var/log/apache2, especially the error log.
