After the x-th try forth and back with different scenarios and much of clonezilla'ing I'd like to ask/share some questions additional to the gentoo handbook.
Target is a lightweight snappy Desktop/Workstation System for daily use for browsing, printing, office work, TeX, emulation and multimedia (music and videos).

The general installation procedure is no problem for me, got it all up and running, custom kernel, locales set, even some framebuffer gfx stuff. Got no serious problems with package masking, special use flags, accepted keywords and overlays.
Problems occur on setting up a decent desktop environment (I'd prefer Cinnamon 2.0.x sabayon overlay) along with a keyring, d/m/ibusses and whatever else busses and of course a decent integration and interaction of all components, filetypes and network shares together flawlessly.

Some most important feature requests/questions I have:
What is/are/ How to:

  • important preparations before installing any X related software/environment (f.e. I have to add INPUT_DEVICES="evdev", setting LINGUAS to native language etc. to my make.conf, any more?)
  • Automount/-unmount ALL connected drives with ALL users, with/without keyring, that is for me EXT4, FAT32, NTFS, DVD Burner, external Floppy drive
  • especially CIFS mounttools for different file managers? I prefer nemo. Samba with USE="client"?
  • what WM needs what keyring and how is it configured to use it automatically for mounting and other SU purpose? Used gnome-keyring for Cinnamon, but it didn't work.
  • esp. for Cinnamon CIFS mounts and network managing, what packages and configuration is to do? Would I need gconf?
  • any peparations, precautions, conflicts with udev, openrc, systemd stuff along with Cinnamon or any other WM? Custom kernel options required?
  • about the (d)bus stuff, does it setup automatically or are there configurations required?
  • groups I have to set my main users to? I'm currently aware of audio, video, games, wheel, lp and lpadmin
  • "MUST HAVE" USE flags, tips for above stuff keeping it small, but (auto)-configurable

Generally there's not much output at emerging my software selection of how to configure them properly. After emerging my steps are to read the information given (if given) "edit config there, add to runlevel there etc." and do it, mostly also reading the well commented config-files.
What I'm looking for is not another further time-consuming crawling through 100 package's manpages, but a short digest of the most important (working) setup. If I'd do all the manual crawling I'm ready for xmas (2013?) and better use another distro where everything's working with default package installations and minor config tweaks.
Am a bit lost at the moment and not amused of the time spent without solutions or fixing problems, reading manpages describing general use but not with integration of other software, I'd never faced in any other distros. This is maybe a bit of a rant, but also a try to face the powerful gentoo, as I really like the philosophy building a system from sources. Maybe it's just some tweaks I'd need (see above list) to be more happy with it and get it on.

Regards

PS: Story of all of this was fiddling around several days for each Enlightenment, Openbox and Cinnamon 1.8 as well as 2.0 and NOTHING worked from scratch, then doing much googling and reading, fixing one or more stuff, but still many stuff is missing or not working correctly as bloated but ready final desktop liveCDs, DVDs or ubuntu KDE/Gnome/Unity stuff. I'm not talking about software, but core functions of missing/wrong icons, integration, interaction, device-management, X keyboard layouts, regional settings don't work correctly.

MINT for Cinnamon

try out Mageia KDE

Openbox / Enlightenment a nothing for beginner if you don't read man pages or wiki. ^^
many things really don't work out of the box. More or less wanted this way by ebuild maintainer.

and you dont want to use lightweight desktop

What you want is a full working Desktop environment!
that much easier and faster to get with a Binary distribution.

Sorry my english is poor
