I decided at the start that I would not create a separate boot paritiion. I have all the primary partitions of my disk used up so when I initially mounted my installation, I didn't do "mount /dev/"new partition" /mnt/gentoo/boot". I did however do "mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot". Now when I do "genkernel all" it complains that there is no /boot partition. Am I in trouble? How can I salvage the installation? I am stopping the installation at this point and will resume when I receive an answer.

thanks in advance for help

When /boot isn't mounted, you are seeing contents on your root partition. Move those files out of there temporarily.

Then, mount your /boot partition, and move those files into it.

Check your /etc/fstab to make sure it correctly specifies your /boot partition.

Lastly, reinstall your bootloader just to be safe.

That should make everything happy!
