Hi there,

since my HDD recorder is not recording anymore due (and it's already the second one with that problem) I thought I might as well try with a tv tuner card (or rather, USB-dongle since it'll be attached to a laptop).
Of course it's crucial that it runs on Gentoo (or Linux in general).
While looking for advice, I stumbled upon this manufacturer, of whom I hadn't heard before. Seems like they're OFFICIALLY supporting Linux (which in itself is a rarity): http://sundtek.com/shop/Digital-TV-Sticks-oxid/Sundtek-MediaTV-Pro-DVB-C/T/T2-FM-Radio-AnalogTV.html
Does anyone have experience with this thing or other HW by Sundtek? It doesn't bother me that their driver seems to be closed source - I'm running the closed source NVidia drivers, too.
Hauppauge seems to make nice cards as well, but I found that they're not always supported, since they come up with revisions of older models which are then do not work.

Must have feature:
Anologue TV (cable, terrestrial)
Compatibility to Linux

Nice:
remote control
input from other sources (composite and the like)

If you know of any good linux card that has these features, please let me know.

Thanks.

I don't have a TV card yet as I'm not sure I really want one, but I think I found the page you should look for to check Linux support: http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Device_Information.

If you do not get enough information here, you could try contacting the MythTV users list. Even if you elect not to use MythTV to manage the capture card, users there will all be using various capture cards, so they may have more applicable experience.

I've used several USB DVB-T sticks over the years. The one piece of relevant advice I can offer is to ask if you have a strong signal. My experience is that the Linux DVB drivers don't seem to handle Automatic Gain Control properly. In weak signal areas, I found the proprietary <cough>Windows</cough> TV software found many more stations than Linux, though the extra ones tended to suffer from breakup.

I have a pair of Hauppauge hvr-1600s sitting around in my basement. Comcast recently went all-encrypted, and I moved to an HD-Homerun Prime. I'd been running them with MythTV for several years prior.

The hvr-1600 has dual tuners, NTSC and ATSC/QAM. The NTSC also has hardware mpeg on card. It has an IR receiver and blaster, though I never used either of those, myself.
