Hi all,

noob here switching to Linux - have mercy, I am fluffy and cuddly.

I want to install Gentoo on a Dell XPS12.
On the long run, I am aiming for a non-dual boot, pure 64bit, GNOME, hardened, XEN Gentoo installation. It's a tall order, but that just means that I will learn a lot in the mean time, including how to better handle frustration :)

I managed to get the Gentoo iso on a USB stick and to boot from it - disabling Secure Boot.
So, my first hurdle is that the wireless lan device is not working. Apparently, the Intel Dual Band Wireless AC-7260 requires the Kernel version 3.11 or later to work, while the Kernel on the current ISO is 3.10.7. How do I overcome this? can I somehow change the Kernel on the USB drive? Or is there a way to download a portage snapshot (the stage3 files I have already) in order to compile a 3.12 Kernel without an Internet connection, and connect later?

On a second note, will I be able to install Gentoo in UEFI mode?

In general, if you have experience or tips or links about Gentoo on the XPS12 or even XPS13 (close enough), I would appreciate greatly if you would share it.

Thank you in advance!

Well, for me the easiest way to install gentoo is from Ubuntu. You can install Ubuntu then install Gentoo or boot Ubuntu from the LiveCD and install Gentoo. Ubuntu 13.10 comes with kernel 3.11, you can download this. Of course, you can install Gentoo from another distro, just remember to check the kernel version.

Here is the how-to http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Gentoo-Linux-from-Ubuntu and remember reading the Gentoo handbook too for more details or when you need.

I used knoppix livedvd for it, just remember to download DVD version, on CD 64bit version is not included, you need it to chroot and build up your 64bit system.

Thank you! I will read that guide. I hesitated between Ubuntu and Knoppix, at the end choosing Ubuntu because it detects my hardware very well.

Will I be able to boot Gentoo with secure boot on, at the end?

[EDIT]

Reading around, I got the impression that systemd is the way to go. Unfortunately, I find the https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd page rather obscure, particularly the sections "Installation" and "Booting with Systemd". Can someone please explain them to me in human language? Should I post this question somewhere else?
