I am trying yo install gentoo on an old HP Pavillion de4200.

The wireless network adapter is Intel PRO/Wireless 2200bg.

In the list of compiled modules I get ipw2100 but not ipw2200. I also get iwlegacy and iwl3945.
Generic IEEE802.11 Network Stack compiled in kernel.

Googling always advises "loading ipw2200", if only I had it...

Any suggestion?

Is this when you are running the install from the gentoo livecd and trying to get networking to work? I imagine that that module isn't enabled in the kernel, have you tried installing gentoo from RescueCD?

If you are just trying to get wireless working on your existing install you will need to build the following into your kernel or build as a module

Symbol: IPW2200 [=n]
Type : tristate
Prompt: Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG Network Connection
Location:
-> Device Drivers
-> Network device support (NETDEVICES [=y])
-> Wireless LAN (WLAN [=y])
Defined at drivers/net/wireless/ipw2x00/Kconfig:66
Depends on: NETDEVICES [=y] && WLAN [=y] && PCI [=y] && \
CFG80211 [=y] && CFG80211_WEXT [=y]
Selects: WIRELESS_EXT [=n] && WEXT_SPY [=n] && WEXT_PRIV [=n] && \
FW_LOADER [=y] && LIB80211 [=n] && LIBIPW [=n]

Thanks for answering, you made me look better for a driver which must be there. It was a fresh install.

I overlooked that, upon making menuconfig and selecting

Networking support-->wireless --> cfg80211 wireless extension compatibility

more drivers show up in

Device Drivers ---> Network device support -->Wireless LAN,

including the one I was looking for:

Device Drivers ---> Network device support -->Wireless LAN-->Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG

To whom it may be useful, Google luck!
