I followed the handbook to install. I'm just past the point where I reboot into the actual hd install instead of the livecd.

Im trying to emerge gentoolkit but it fails. Can someone please enlighten me as to what is going wrong here?

Ok figured it out

I had to activate the udev init script

Code:

rc-update add udev sysinit

not sure why it is never mentioned that i would need this in the handbook.

yea I was thinking something was wrong with python as well at first, but everything seemed to be all set.

It turned out emerge was failing to find a directory that the udev init scripts were supposed to set up, which then led to the python problem

Quote:

/var/tmp/portage/app-portage/gentoolkit-0.3.0.8-r2/temp/environment: line 2631: /dev/fd/62: No such file or directory

At least I think thats what happened... Either way, I added the udev init script and restarted and everything works now.

Thanks for making an effort to help anyway :)

That directory is an alias for /proc/self. It may be used when doing certain types of elaborate redirections, particularly when running subprograms that expect to receive paths that can be passed to open.
