I tried to switch to systemd on a clean system and X is starting on tty2 rather than tty7. Should another service be starting at boot?

Beyond this, you're more or less on your own.

It would be nice if the handbook would have been updated before Gnome 3 went stable since it requires systemd. But, of course, not everyone wants gnome or systemd so I guess they can't make a wholesale change.

If I was you, I'd start with another clean system then start the systemd wiki right after your first boot. You'll definitely want to get systemd working correctly before installing Gnome (if that's your intention). That, or stick with OpenRC and choose a different window manager.

originally thats what I tried. I ran in to numerous problems and eventually I decided that it might be easier to get everything else up and running. I don't think it should actually make too much of a difference.

As for reasoning behind switching. I have no desire to run gnome. I use openbox. I just wanted to learn systemd since it will most likely replace OpenRC.
