I've got an x86 stable, headless, Gentoo server that I want to upgrade over the network, from the 2.6.33 kernel to the latest stable, 3.10.25 kernel. The server is configured with a single drive for the OS, and a 12 drive raid5 array for a separate volume. Unfortunately this is one of the first Gentoo servers I ever built, and it is very basic. It's doesn't use lvm, I just created the single raid5 volume and created one big XFS partition on it. I use grub-0.97 with no initram, etc.
The first time I tried upgrading the kernel from 2.x to 3.x, (around the release of 3.x), I remember rebooting and then not being able to mount the raid5 array. At the time, I needed it back up and running, and so I didn't try and debug the situation, I simply downgraded to the last known good 2.6 kernel, and then masked any kernel versions above that. However, I'd like to try upgrading now and solving this, preferably preemptively.
It's currently up and running under the old kernel and I've updated the world, and emerged the latest kernel and linux headers. I just need to know once I upgrade the kernel, if there is anything else I need to do before I reboot.
Thanks,
Jason

"WFM" ("Works for me")
I had upgraded a really old 2.6.20s era machine with a 4-disk RAID5 all the way to 3.6+ ... And even changing from IDE drivers to libata...
Just be careful with disk drivers...
Likely you will need to spend the debugging effort unfortunately, whether it is posting your .config and/or you dmesg on failed detect to see what worked and what didnt. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K@ 4.1GHz/HD3000 graphics/8GB DDR3/180GB SSD

(Well I'll be..)
You're right. I just now tried rebooting my server after upgrading the kernel from 2.x to 3.x, and it worked without issue.
Thanks.. |
