I recently installed Gentoo on a new machine (HP EliteDesk 800 G1 TWR ). The installation went remarkably well, although the install medium froze at one point. I'm not sure if it's related, but after the installation I've experienced random freezes where nothing but resetting helps (Magic SysRq does nothing). I switched from the NVIDIA drivers to nouveau (for GeForce GT630), and it seems to have made the freezes less common but has not eliminated them.

The only suspect I have at this point is a certain kworker process, which at some point starts using 100% of one of the processor cores according to top. I followed the instructions here to find out what is causing that, and it seems nouveau_connector_hotplug_work is being called quite a lot: 80% of the calls done in 5 minutes. This eventually starts happening even if I don't start X. I've tried this with x86_64 Gentoo kernels 3.9.11-r1, 3.10.17, 3.10.25 (config), and 3.12.7, but the problem persists. :/

Next I thought of trying the integrated Intel HD Graphics card. While it seemed to work fine, unfortunately the next day I had a kernel oops... I followed the wiki instructions on setting up kdump in case this happens again, as it seems that what was visible on my screen wasn't the whole story.

I've very little idea of what's going on. I guess it could be a hardware problem, bad kernel configuration, or a kernel bug, or some combination of those -- or something I haven't even thought of. What should be my next step?

Hi, did you solve your issue?
The only kernel version working in my system is 3.10.41-r1.

My problem seems to have been fixed in 3.16 (according to this at least). It worked for me for about two months without issue, then something happened... but at least SysRq works now, so it might be a different issue.
