Scenario:
    1. press button on CDROM drive; the tray opens
    2. insert CDROM disk, press button, the tray closes
    3. mount /mnt/cdrom; the light on the CDROM drive flashes a few times; I can read the disk
    4. umount /mnt/cdrom
    5. press button on CDROM drive; nothing happens, the tray doesn't open
    6. eject /dev/cdrom; the tray opens
    7. with the same disk still in the tray, press button again; the tray closes
    8. mount /mnt/cdrom; the system responds with
mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0
    9. press button on CDROM drive; nothing happens, the tray doesn't open
    10. eject /dev/cdrom; nothing happens, the tray still doesn't open; the only way I can remove the disk now is to insert a stiff wire into the emergency eject hole

What is going on here? Why is it that the system only recognizes the first time I insert a CD, not subsequent times? Why does the CDROM drive button get disabled much of the time?

I found something that fixes the problem. Execute this command:
Code:
eject --manualeject off /dev/sr0
Having to specify "off" instead of "on" for the manual eject state seems counterintuitive but that's the way it works. After executing that command, the CDROM drive button works normally and the system doesn't disable the button when it feels like it as before.
