stuff

I am installing Gentoo from my Slackware box and I am running "emerge --sync" for the first time and it is downloading a bunch of experimental and old stuff

Do I really need to download that? Is it normal?

Here is my make.conf if it helps

If I am not much mistaken, (as it has been quite some time for me since having a working Gentoo environment [trying to install now, with issues :(],) the sync function is simply retrieving the catalog of available packages to emerge. It is not downloading the packages or installing them, as to me, you seem to have implied. :)

make.conf excerpt:
SYNC="rsync://gentoo.cs.uni.edu/gentoo-distfiles"
There's your problem right there. You should be syncing with "gentoo-portage", not "gentoo-distfiles". :wink:

It was taking so long to download that it wasn't only retrieving the catalog
