Hi all,

I have a Toshiba Satellite S55-A5359 with a Realtek RTL8188E Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have a Minimal LiveCD downloaded two weeks ago. I have hit a road block right from the start with the wireless card not being recognized in some way. I don't currently have access to an ethernet connection.

It is shown in lspci, but not in if/iwconfig and there's no entry in /sys/class/net. I went through a number of things to try and diagnose/solve the problem. I tried the default module via modprobe which output some messages to dmesg. A few lines about frequencies but nothing about a wireless LAN interface coming up or anything as far as I could see. I switched back to Windows 7 and downloaded the current driver package from Realtek and then re-entered the CD environment, mounted the Windows partition and tried again to mount but found that one, the drivers needed to be compiled, and two, there is no 'make' on the LiveCD!

So unless anyone can help with that issue my real question(s) are:

Is there a way I can start an install, without having an internet connection? Can certain files be downloaded and subsequently utilized via mounting in the CD environment?

Or is there a way I can install 'make' where I can further properly load the drivers?

Would using an older minimal with an older kernel help in some way?

I haven't used Gentoo (or Linux at all) for some years and it occurs to me that these questions might just simply be ridiculous and evident of some fundamental lack of understanding on my part. I hope to be enlightened. :)

Use SystemRescueCD instead. Put it in a USB stick and leave it there, USB sticks do not cost an arm and leg, it becomes handy with any PC issues.
