Code:
Total: 423 packages (423 new), Size of downloads: 1,292,529 kB

 * Error: circular dependencies:

(app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20131008::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) depends on
(app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-opengl-20131008::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)
(app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20131008::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)

It might be possible to break this cycle
by applying the following change:
- app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20131008 (Change USE: -opengl)

Note that this change can be reverted, once the package has been installed.

Note that the dependency graph contains a lot of cycles.
Several changes might be required to resolve all cycles.
Temporarily changing some use flag for all packages might be the better option.

In make.conf you have -opengl and opengl USE flags. You should remove -opengl.

In /etc/portage/package.use you should have
Code:
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs -opengl

After you build app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs you should delete app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs -opengl[ from the /etc/portage/package.use file and do another emerge.

 * Note that circular dependencies can often be avoided by temporarily
 * disabling USE flags that trigger optional dependencies.

I ran into this same issue.

Try emerging with -gpm and then it complains about something else and the chain continues until it says it can't compile gcc and glibc.

My solution was to emerge gdbm. It resolved the whole chain of dependency issues and then I was able to emerge the portage update and continue on my merry way.
