I am doing a fresh installation on a new system and found that bindist was enabled in the current stage3 file in /etc/portage/make.conf. I guess I could just disable this option, but is this the recommended approach. None of my other installation have this option enabled. I was also wondering why this is enabled by default?

I know this flag allows for the installation of certain binary packages rather then building from source, which speeds up build time. However on the first attempt I ran into some trouble emerging bind / openssl.

I noticed it's appearance too on a new install. I just removed it and moved on, as global bindist has only caused problems for me in the past. I'm not surprised to hear it caused issues as well for you. I can't really think of a good reason to have it there, and it should be removed from the default IMO.

It's just a licensing thing - some Licenses disallow the distribution of binary packages (like e.g. firefox).
Setting bindist by default is a kind of safe default: if a user wants to distribute his or her packages it's allowed. If he or she wants it, he or she can disable it - you just won't do stuff that is against the license by default...
