I have sound working for some things like Pandora in firefox, but it doesn't work in Chromium (or at least doesn't work with flash and maybe html5 videos). My motivation is to get it working for everything, but right now I'm focused on the aplay -l output, which is the most specific problem I've identified.

I have two soundcards: an internal intel card and an external Creative Pro something usb card.

Relevant line from lspci:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Relevant line from lsusb:
us 002 Device 011: ID 041e:30dd Creative Technology, Ltd

(I want to be able to use either device.) Everything below refers to when I have the usb device plugged in.

I have drivers built into the kernel for both devices. (I assume the drivers and my kernel config are correct since I can get sound correctly for some applications and used to get sound correctly for everything, I believe, before I did an "emerge -uvDN @world". However, I can look up exactly what's in my kernel if that would be helpful.

The most specific problem I have and the one I'd like to start with is this: My output from "aplay -l" is:
Code:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/control/control.c:953:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:0
aplay: device_list:277: control open (0): No such file or directory
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/control/control.c:953:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:1
aplay: device_list:277: control open (1): No such file or directory
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/control/control.c:953:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:2
aplay: device_list:277: control open (2): No such file or directory
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/control/control.c:953:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:4
aplay: device_list:277: control open (4): No such file or directory

I have also-lib-1.0.27.2 and a custom configured kernel from gentoo-sources-3.13.1.

My .asoundrc:
Code:

pcm.internal {
        type hw
        card 0
        device 0
}

ctl.internal {
        type hw
        card 0
        device 0
}

pcm.!default {
        type hw
        card 2
        device 0
}

ctl.!default {
        type hw
        card 2
        device 0
}

(which I created using the output from aplay -l when it gave me the expected output; this did successfully set my default device to be my usb audio device previously, unless I've messed something up in the file since I've been trying to debug this problem, which is possible)

Please let me know if you have any ideas on what my problem is or how to go about debugging this. Let me know if I can provide more information. Thanks.
