Given these 3 partition of an external USB drive
Code:
$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 750.2 GB, 750156374016 bytes, 1465149168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xcf819e32

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1   *          63     1959929      979933+  83  Linux
/dev/sdb2         1959930    21494969     9767520   82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdb3        21494970   404291789   191398410   83  Linux
/me wonders which grub2 section I do need to boot a straight vanilla kernel w/o initrd from it. My currents attempts always brought something like "VFS: root partition not found" followed by a hang
Update:Grmpf - could it just be the reason that booting from an external USB drive won't work without an initrd ?

You can boot without initrd, but determining the right boot disk can be tricky.
I think there's posts in the past indicating the use of GPT partition tables as the kernel can figure these out on its own, or else yes initrd is needed for regular partition tables.

I have most of my portable HDDs use initrd however... it works for me...
