I've been attempting to install Gentoo amd64 minimal as a VirtualBox Guest. I've followed the Gentoo Handbook (amd64 version) and the VirtualBox Guest instructions here.

Everything goes well until the step where I unmount everything and reboot the system without the LiveCD. When I boot the system I get the following kernel panic:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt


I don't know how to make sense of these logs, but it seems to me that the line "Modules linked in:" should not be blank, right? I used genkernel to build the kernel.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Your problem can come from the way you set up the Cpu section in your virtual machine. Genkernel create an Smp kernel. Smp kernels can not always run on mono processor machine, what it seem's you have. The kernel do not switch by itself from SMP (Symetric Multi Processing) to UP (Uni Processor).

So, you can set your virtual machine with more than one processor to try to resolv this problem or pass a parameter to the kernel that will disable Smp. In case of a mono processor, try to add to your kernel command line

Instead of maxcpus=0, you can use nosmp. Both do the same and disable the I/O Apic at the same time.

maxcpus allow you to tell to the kernel how many cpus it will use at maximum, for two it will be maxcpus=2. maxcpus=1 will not disable Smp like maxcpus=0.

The host system has a quad-core processor, and I've already enabled all four cores on the VM settings. Other VMs are able to use all four cores when I run them (such as Debian) no problem.

I see in the log:

So it is recognizing all four virtual CPUs. I tried adding maxcpus=4 and it didn't make a difference. The kernel still panics with the same messages.

xtagon, this worked for you? It didn't for me; see the bug listing here:

I ask just because I wonder if (a) I'm hitting a different problem with similar symptoms, such that the fix for others and not for me, or (b) I'm an idiot, and I'm doing something else wrong (like, fumbling when I apply the fix, or whatever).

twork, yes, this worked for me.

What is your host OS? Mine is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, but the bug reporter's was Mac OS. So maybe you are having a slightly different problem. In any case, feel free to post your kernel panic details in hopes that someone smarter than me can help you out.

Excellent. I upgraded to 4.3.8 and experienced the same kernel panic issue.
