Today I attempted to update my ThinkPad T510 from gentoo-sources-3.13.7 to gentoo-sources-3.14.0. After the update, the time it took to go from hitting ENTER in Grub2 to having a GDM login prompt took 110 to 115 seconds. Previously, it took 50 to 55 seconds. I diffed the two configs, and didn't see anything significant, mostly just lines like "# CONFIG_X not set". I've also gone over my logs and can't see anything obvious, though I did find these lines interesting:

From my last boot into 3.14.0:
Code:
Apr 05 17:01:28 irena systemd[1]: Startup finished in 9.875s (kernel) + 1min 2.507s (userspace) = 1min 12.382s.

From my last boot into 3.13.7:
Code:
Apr 05 17:04:47 irena systemd[1]: Startup finished in 9.895s (kernel) + 34.908s (userspace) = 44.804s.

Does anyone have any tips or pointers on the next steps I should take to troubleshoot this problem?

What are the times if you boot to a text console and skip the X startup? Does dmesg show any time gaps or errors?

Yes. This problem caused by someone from intel commit a patch, create bunch of unused objects under /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/, see commit 202317a573b20d77a9abb7c16a3fd5b40cef3d9d.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to this thread. Work got in the way.

That's a great question, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I disabled GDM, and under both kernel versions, it takes about 30-35 seconds to get a login prompt, though with gentoo-sources-3.14.0, the hard drive light remains lit for a while after. If I wait for things to settle, then start GDM manually, it takes 20-25 seconds under gentoo-sources-3.13.7 to get to the GDM login screen. Under gentoo-sources-3.14.0, the same thing takes 80-85 seconds.

There were no time gaps that I noticed, but I'll try to go through the logs again and see if I can find anything. There were some errors, though I didn't find anything that wasn't also in the log when I booted into gentoo-sources-3.13.7. I researched some of them, but they turned out to be innocuous.

Is there a bug filed somewhere that I could follow for this?
