The hardware is a HP Envy m6-1105dx laptop with Insyde UEFI Bios and Ati Radeon 7660G graphics card. I installed Gentoo with systemd support on a UEFI/GPT hardware. The ncurses part went ok. I am able to set up grub2-efi, WiFi, locale, date/time, and other functions. As far as I can tell, the system boots correctly.

The trouble starts when I try to set up xfce4 with a graphical login screen using xdm or lxdm. I installed the X server, graphics driver, and xfce4 with
Code:

emerge ati-drivers xfce4-meta xfce4-power-manager xdm

thunar-volman won't install, because it depends on udev which is incompatible with systemd, but that is another problem.
I set up /etc/X11/xorg.conf with
Code:

aticonfig --initial

Then added the xdm service with
Code:

systemctl enable xdm.service

It boots into an xdm login screen. After typing name and password, it jumps back to the same screen. lxdm is even worse, it freezes. I tried a text login and launching xfce4 manually both as root and user using
Code:

xinit -- /usr/bin/startxfce4

xfce4 is launched and works for a couple of minutes before freezing. This is the USE flag in /etc/portage/make.conf
Code:

USE="X alsa disable-watermark gtk gtk3 gudev laptop sound systemd udisks -gdu  -gnome -gvfs -kde -webkit"

I want to avoid spending countless hours building such massive packages as gnome, kde, webkit, etc., hence the various minus signs.
Any help will be appreciated.

read lightdm wiki, you directly run the graphical login, not xdm....

I did try lightdm.
Code:

emerge lightdm
systemctl enable lightdm

Gentoo boots into a lightdm login screen. When I enter name and password, it seems to want to launch xfce4, but then jumps back out and the screen freezes.

I installed the ati beta driver. Now xfce4 no longer freezes.

I still can't get xdm and lightdm window managers to work.

However the lxdm window manager works.
