Greetings. Installing on an Acer Aspire One ZG5.

First problem is that when xfce4 boots up, the caps lock key activates. I've tried to disable this via the GUI, but so far it seems ineffective. Hitting FN+F11 every time I startup isn't a deal breaker, but it's a minor hassle.

The more severe issue is with my wireless. I apparently have a setting wrong somewhere. It is not a hardware issue- I booted up with an Ubuntu Live CD (Live USB?) and it recognized my wireless out of the box. I'm running Wicd and WPA2 Supplicant.

iwconfig shows "no wireless extensions" for any of my devices, including wlp3s0.

ivanovitch,

Welcome to Gentoo.

What hardware provides wlp3s0?
lsusb or lspci should show it.

Look through your dmesg. The driver for your wlp3s0 may have tried to load fimware and failed.
If that happened, there will be an entry in dmesg telling the name of the file you need.

If I run:

Code:
dmesg | grep wlp3s0

All I get is:
[ 9.237456] systemd-udevd[1131]: renamed network interface wlan0 to wlp3s0
[ 24.948581] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlp3s0: link is not ready

ivanovich ... the driver for that card is ath5k, no firmware is required.

The issue you are seeing with 'iwconfig' is that this tool (along with wicd) uses the now legacy 'WEXT' (wireless extentions) the new NL80211/CFG80211 is used for most kernel drivers (including ath5k). CFG80211 does have emulation for WEXT (CONFIG_CFG80211_WEXT) but it looks to be disabled in your kernel ...

Code:
# awk '/(WEXT|(CFG|NL)80211)/' /usr/src/linux/.config

You will need CFG80211_WEXT to use any tool that still uses the old WEXT (such as net-wireless/wireless-tools ... which contains iwconfig ... net-misc/wicd, net-wireless/aircrack-ng, and others). So enable it or switch to net-wireless/iw, net-wireless/wpa_supplicant ... etc.

HTH & best ... khay

So, if I remove Wicd and go with Network Manager or similar, it'll solve my problems? If my problem is WEXT, I should just get rid of WEXT, right?

ivanovitch ... by the looks of things, yes. But as I said, you could enable CFG80211_WEXT (the WEXT compatability layer) in the kernel ... this would provide WEXT for those applications that require it. Going NL80211/CFG80211 only is forward looking but you may have to get use to other tools (net-wireless/iw to replace 'iwconfig', etc), so, what path you take is up to you.

best ... khay

recommend edit menuconfig to include:
Quote:
-*- Networking support --->
-*- Wireless --->
<M> cfg80211 - wireless configuration API
[*] cfg80211 wireless extensions compatibility
<M> Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack (mac80211)
<M> RF switch subsystem support ----
recompile recopy kernelharmless if you have it and don't need it, problem if don't and you do need it. we've been through a couple of cycles where nl80211 used some of wext's code; you can select nl80211 in wicd even with this choice enabled

That worked like a charm. I'm posting this from my newly wireless-enabled netbook. Thank you!

As soon as I figure out this caps lock thing, we're in the clover.
